5 Secrets Makeup Artists Don’t Tell You

I get tons of questions from friends, readers of my blog and even acquaintances about tips for makeup application.  Makeup is such a personal thing, and there are so many different ways to apply and wear makeup for your own liking.  Between my previous makeup application training and consistent product research, I have picked up a bunch of tips to achieve a flawless makeup look.  Since I totally love all things beauty and makeup, I’m always more than happy to share my recommendations and advice with those who ask.  Surprisingly, there are a few tricks that make a huge difference that I’m always shocked by how few people know about!  In today’s blog post, I’m sharing my top 5 secrets that makeup artists don’t tell you but will TOTALLY change your makeup game.

  1. Do your eye makeup first This one is such an easy change, and I’m always SO surprised by how many people have never heard this advice.  Think about it – if you do your foundation first, spend time getting it looking flawless and then do your eyes you can totally ruin it by fall out from your eye shadow, a messed up eyeliner wing or a number of other possible problems.  By switching the order and doing your eye makeup first, you can simply wipe away any fall out or unclean lines with a tissue and then move on to your foundation.  In my opinion, it helps make both your eye and face makeup look more clean and professionally done.
  2. Prime, prime, prime! – Most of the questions I get when it comes to makeup center around how to get a smooth, even looking makeup look.  No one wants patchy looking foundation or eye shadow that creases throughout the day!  I always recommend a primer, especially an eye primer and face primer.  Not only does it help your makeup apply smoothly and evenly, but it helps your makeup last all day long {even in the heat}!
  3. It’s not you, it’s your brushes – So often people tell me they “don’t know how to do their makeup,” and then when I ask them what brushes they use they look at me with a confused look.  If you are using those brushes you use in a cheap kit {or even worse those little sponge, or no brushes at all} you are seriously doing yourself a disservice!  You don’t need 50 different brushes do do your makeup, but you do need at least a few high quality brushes each with an intended use.  I would recommend at least two eye shadow brushes, a powder brush, a bronzer blush and a blush brush.  Even easier?  Pick up a brush set so you have all the basics you’ll need for a flawless face!  You may think you can get away without, but I promise you your makeup will thank you when you invest in a few quality brushes!
  4. Spend a bit more on what’s important to you – This one may seem a bit obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people skimp in areas that they complain about.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about finding great products at the drugstore but also like to spend a little more when it makes sense.  Think about your makeup look, and pick 2-3 things that you care most about.  For me lately, I want flawless skin, glossy lips and bold eyelashes.  Since those areas are my priority, I tend to spend a bit more on a glowy CC cream, my favorite lipgloss and a great mascara.  That means I usually go a little cheaper on my blush or lipstick.  Everyone’s focus areas will be different, so choose what’s important for you and don’t be scared to spend a little bit more to get a high quality product!
  5. It’s an art, not a science – The thing with makeup is that it’s SO subjective – what one person loves another might hate!  I could tell you a million tips or tricks, but there really are no rules.  If anyone tries to tell you there’s a right and a wrong way to do makeup, they are taking themselves a bit too seriously.  With makeup, feel free to experiment, try things out, make mistakes and try again.  It’s only makeup and at the end of the day you just wash it off, so make it fun and unique to you!

The Glorification Of “Busy”

June 7, 2016

ec573bb163a81a87fbe63e3ec33e5696

You may have noticed I’ve been a little MIA from this little blog of mine.  For a long time, I justified my lack of posting with comments like “Oh, I’m just too busy right now” or “I don’t have enough time.”  BUT a few weeks ago I read Mindy Kaling’s new book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me and she had this amazing quote that totally stuck with me.

“I do not think stress is a legitimate topic of conversation, in public anyway. No one ever wants to hear how stressed out anyone else is, because most of the time everyone is stressed out. Going on and on in detail about how stressed out I am isn’t conversation. It’ll never lead anywhere. No one is going to say, “Wow, Mindy, you really have it especially bad. I have heard some stories of stress, but this just takes the cake.” – Mindy Kaling

Okay… so real right?! 🙌🏼 But something about our culture lately seems to glorify busyness.  It’s almost like if you aren’t running around doing a million things or feeling insanely stressed, are you even doing anything? 😑 Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about working hard and putting in the hustle, but there’s no prize at the end of your life for working the longest hours or having the most activities on your calendar.

In my mind, it all comes down to prioritization.  Everyone has the same hours in the day, and we all choose how we want to spend them.  You may think that some things {like your job or obligations} aren’t a choice, but if you get up every morning and make it to work then you are making a choice not to skip work and get fired.  Which is great!  For me?  The past few months I’ve been prioritizing my friends, my relationship, traveling and my personal health over this tiny corner of the internet.  But here’s the good news – if you feel good about what you’re prioritizing then there’s absolutely NOTHING wrong with making those choices!  Even though I wasn’t making time for my blog, I was able to focus on other areas of my life that needed a bit more attention – and I’m okay with that!  Often when people get overwhelmed, it’s because they are prioritizing things that don’t fulfill them or enrich their life.

I’m excited to get back into the swing of blogging, but I am making a promise to myself not to feel guilty if I choose happy hour with my girlfriends or a yoga class over writing a blog post.  Of course, I absolutely love blogging and the creative outlet it provides me, but I’m giving myself permission to put myself first.  At the end of the day, all that matters are the memories you’ve made, the relationships you’ve built and the impact you’ve made on the lives of others. ❤️

With festival season right around the corner, it is one of the most exciting times for fun and unique fashion and beauty trends.  As someone who isn’t heading off to Coachella, I’m constantly browsing Instagram, Snapchat and all other social media to see what fun trends are hitting the festival scene!  Last year it was all about the flash tattoos and fishtail braids, but this year things are a bit more simple when it comes to the major festival trends.  This summer it’s all about the strong brow, natural skin and earthy tones in makeup and beauty.  I know there’s no surprise when I say that Target is my favorite place to shop for new beauty items, so I’m sharing a few of my latest finds to embrace the festival trends!

  • Earthy Shadow – I’m normally someone who totally reaches for neutral toned eyeshadows, regardless of the season. It’s hilarious looking at my eye palettes, because the neutral shadows are always the first ones gone!  With festival season upon us, I’m totally loving the earthy tones for my eyes and this NYX Go-To palette is my go-to option for a budget-friendly palette.  With a nice winged liner {like this NYX one}, you’ve got a perfect eye look that’s festival-ready!
  • Natural Skin – When it comes to face makeup, I tend to tread the line between “full coverage flawless skin” and “natural finish”. It definitely depends on the day which side I fall on, but for festival season, the trends all center around making the skin look perfect, dewy and natural.  So much of this trend is all about the skin prep, which is why I’m all about the La Roche Posay sunscreens and CC creams with SPF.  It may sound dramatic, but the biggest skin enemy when it comes to aging and wrinkles is the sun!  That’s why it’s SO critical to use a high-quality sunscreen to keep your skin protected {without the risk of breakouts}.
  • Bold Eyebrows – Lastly, one of my favorite trends this season {and the past little while} is a well-defined, bold brow. I am obsessed with the L’oreal Brow Plumper for every type of brow, since it helps fill in sparse areas and keep stray hairs in place.  For those looking for a pencil/gel duo, the Pixi Natural Brow Duo is the perfect choice for the festival heat and sweat.

For those who may not be heading off to Coachella this weekend, it’s still SO easy to embrace the festival beauty trends!  Be sure to check out Target for all of their amazing new beauty products and brands that are festival-ready.  Plus, follow along @TargetStyle for all of the fabulous #TargetStyle posts.

5 Makeup Tips For Glasses

Makeup-Glasses

I’ve been wearing glasses since like the fourth grade, and wasn’t allowed to wear makeup until middle school {and even then I was only allowed to wear clear mascara… does that even do anything?!} 😂 By the time I was wearing makeup, I was pretty religious about wearing my contacts every day.  However, a few years ago I needed to give my contacts a break and wear my glasses for a few weeks.  During that time, I quickly realized that applying makeup for glasses requires different techniques to ensure your eyes look fabulous behind your frames!  Today, I’m sharing my top 5 makeup tips for glasses so you look fabulous and feel confident while wearing your glasses!

  1. Undereye Concealer – The frames of your glasses can cast a shadow beneath the eyes, which will accentuate any dark circles and make the eyes appear sunken in.  When your eyes are behind glasses, it’s important to make them look bright and awake.  Use a brightening concealer under the eye, making sure to apply in the inner corner of the eye.  Blend with a sponge, brush or clean finger to leave the eyes looking luminous without any dark shadows.
  2. Choose Neutral Eyeshadow Shades – The last thing you want is for your eyeshadow to compete with your frames, so choose neutral eyeshadow colors that make the eyes pop.  Some flattering shades include champagne, bronze, taupe, nudes and chocolate browns.  By keeping your eyeshadow neutral, you can let your frames enhance your eyes!
  3. Curl Your Eyelashes – This is an essential step when wearing makeup with glasses!  Without curling your eyelashes, you can end up with last breakage if your eyelashes are constantly hitting the glass in your frames.  Especially with mascara, this can cause damage to your eyelashes and even get pesky mascara flakes on your lenses.  Instead, use your eyelashe curler to give your lashes lift and make your eyes look open behind your frames!
  4. Define Your Eyebrows – Just like your glasses frame your eyes, your eyebrows frame your glasses!  It’s essential to make sure your eyebrows are well groomed and fully defined to enhance the look of your glasses.  Use an eyebrow pencil or powder to fill in any sparse areas, and finish with a clear brow gel to keep the hairs in place.  By ensuring your eyebrows are looking their best, your glasses and eyes will serve as the main focus of your face!
  5. Choose The Right Frames – The most basic step in making your eye makeup look great behind glasses, is choosing the right frames for your face!  Luckily, you don’t have to try on hundreds of pairs to find your perfect pair.  VSP Direct offers eyewear consultations with their style experts, and right now you can enter their “Frame Your Fashion” sweepstakes to get a free eyewear consult and designer sunglasses!  You can enter weekly through May 25th by sharing a selfie with #VSPStyleSweepstakes, and one grand prize winner {selected from 10 weekly winners} will receive one year of VSP Direct vision insurance and a $250 gift card.
