How To Deep Clean Your Makeup Brushes

January 14, 2014

Okay guys, let’s be honest with one another. When is the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? A month? Two? Never? If you are anything like me, spot cleaning is just not something on my to-do list, so it had been a loooong time since I had cleaned my brushes.

Are you sitting there thinking “But I do my makeup the same everyday and use the same colors, why would I need to wash my makeup brushes?!” Think about all the yucky bacteria and oil that is building up on them. Ever wonder why you’re breaking out? PLUS you spend money on those brushes, so why not take care of them?!

All you need is a gentle shampoo {I use baby shampoo}, a cup, glass or jar, your sink and a paper towel. Start by letting your brushes soak in a mixture of soap and water for around 5 minutes to loosen up the makeup, dirt and oil buildup on the brushes. Then one at a time, wash each brush with a dime size amount of shampoo until the water runs clear.

Instead of laying your brushes flat to dry, lay them at an angle with the brushes down. This is important because if water gets in the metal portion it can cause the bristles to loosen and cause shedding.

Allow to dry overnight, and when you wake up you will have soft, clean brushes that will apply your makeup even smoother than before!

What are your beauty cleaning rituals? Do you spot clean, deep clean, or both? Let me know!
