Gym Bag Essentials

When it comes to working out, I’m all about keeping things as easy as possible before and after my work out.  I mean, if I’m getting my butt kicked at the gym I don’t want to mess around with forgetting items!  I try to avoid going straight from a workout to any social gatherings, but sometimes happy hour is calling my name!  On days when I need to run errands or go meet friends after working out, I like to keep a few key items in my gym bag to make the transition as easy as possible.  Here, I’m sharing my gym bag essentials that will make going from the gym to happy hour a breeze!

  • Sneakers – If you’re running errands, sneakers are the way to go!  If you can find a pair to transition from your workout, even better.  My workout of choice is yoga, so I don’t wear any shoes while I’m working out.  However, I recently picked up some new sneaks {this pair is similar} since they’re perfect for running errands and an adorable “athleisure” look.
  • Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant – You guys know I’m a huge fan of Dove, so when they asked me to partner with them to try their new spray antiperspirant I of course said YES!  I’ve gotta say, I’m a huge fan of this product.  One of my biggest pet peeves is when a deodorant leaves white residue under the arms, or even worse… on your clothes!  The Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant goes on clear and is instantly dry, which means you don’t need to waste any time while getting ready!
  • Dry Shampoo – I’m a firm believer in not washing your hair every day, but after a workout it’s important to refresh your hair to get rid of any sweat/dirt/etc.  I love keeping a mini dry shampoo in my gym bag so I can freshen up my hair after a workout, without washing it!
  • Water Bottle – This one may seem obvious, but having a great water bottle is important for before, during and after your workout!  Especially if you’re heading off to happy hour {or even just running errands} it’s essential to hydrate after a work out.
  • Face Wipes – I absolutely cannot workout with makeup on, so I keep face wipes in my gym bag to make sure I can remove any makeup before a workout.  They are also great if you’re working out somewhere without a shower or sink, since you’ll be able to clean your skin quickly and easily!
  • Towel – Especially since I am doing hot yoga most days, a towel is essential for me during my workouts.  If I’m heading somewhere after my sweat session, I like to keep an extra towel on hand to use for a shower, washing my face or even to just freshen up.

Short Term Goal Setting

415ba5470e3f9daaced07ef8f5832eeeSo it may not be New Years, but why not set a goal today?  If you’re only setting goals on January 1st then you are seriously missing out on a whole lot of goal ass-kicking throughout the year!

One of the biggest changes I ever made when kicking my butt into healthy gear was changing my mindset for goals.  Before it was always a vague “I want to get skinny” or “I need to lose 10 pounds” without a timeline or action plan.  These goals were useless because they were often too overwhelming, and when I didn’t feel a sense of achievement immediately I gave up.

While long term goal setting is also important, short term goals are crucial to staying on track and feeling accomplished.  Here are a few tips for short term goal setting:

•  Set realistic goals –  A goal of working out 7 times a week for someone who isn’t working out at all is going to be overwhelming.  When a goal seems unachievable, it is easy to give up completely.  My goal this month of taking 20 yoga classes seems like a lot, but setting a goal of 5 classes a week is much more realistic.  Take baby steps!

•  Write your goals down – I cannot stress this enough!  Writing down your goals makes them feel more real, and it is important to have a specific, written time-frame.

•  Be patient and adjust – This is a working process.  If you find that a weekly goal is impossible to reach, make it smaller the next.  Similarly, if you reach a goal within the first week of your monthly deadline then beef it up the next month!

•  Align short term goals with long term goals – Short term goals–whether they are daily, weekly, monthly, etc.–should contribute towards your long term goal.  If your long term goal is to save up for a major purchase, your short term goal should be to put away money every week.  Similarly, if your long term goal is to achieve a healthy lifestyle then create short term goals that contribute to forming healthy habits.

•  Reward yourself! – One of the best ways to keep yourself on track is to reward yourself for reaching goals, no matter how small!  Just make sure your rewards are in line with your goals {ice cream should not be a reward for eating healthy all week!}.  When I started working out regularly, one of the best ways I rewarded myself was with cute new workout clothing.  Feeling confident while working out motivated me to get my butt off the couch, and also made me want to keep getting my sweat on so I could reach my next goal!
