Tips To Brighten Your Living Space

April 22, 2015

One of my favorite home decor trends is color!  I absolutely love having vibrant colors to brighten up my apartment.  With a neutral palette, I think pops of color can just look so fun and fabulous!  While bright color everywhere may not be everyone’s theme for their living space, today I’m rounding up some great tips to brighten your living space for those times when you’re needing a bit of color in your life!

Whether you’re looking to spice up your living room for summer or wanting some ideas for an outdoor patio, a bit of color is perfect for the warm weather.  Not to mention, it totally brightens up my day to have a bit of color around!  Here are a few easy ways to add some brightness and color to your space.

1. Statement Furniture Piece – This is probably the most radical way, but a colorful piece of furniture can totally change a room!  In my apartment, this chair is my bold piece and I think it helps add some great color and zest to my apartment.  Whether you put a fresh coat of paint on an old end table or buy a fabulous green couch, this is a bold way to bring some bright vibes to your space.

2. Freshen Up Your Bed Set If you’re looking for a quick fix to make a big impact, pick up a colorful comforter and watch your room transform!  With places like Target carrying fabulous bed sets at amazing deals, this is a no brainer if you want an easy set to make a huge change.

3. Colorful Artwork – Whether you go for a large piece that covers half your wall or a print to lean up on your desk, a bright piece of art can go a long way in adding a bit of color to your space.  I’ve got a few of my favorite places to pick up art here, and it’s an easy way to add a bit of color regardless of how much space you have!

4. Fresh Flowers – If you follow me on Instagram, then you know that lately I’ve totally been spoiling myself with fresh flowers.  They are a simple, easy and fabulous way to bring life, color and beauty to any space! Some of my personal favorites lately have been tulips {LOVE!}, hydrangeas and any of the amazing $4 bouquets at Trader Joe’s! ;)

So tell me… what are your quick tips for brightening up your space?  Are you a lover of colors or prefer to stick to neutrals?  Let me know!

10 Tips To Help Flowers Last Longer

April 1, 2015

I absolutely love having fresh flowers around!  They truly just brighten up any space, and bring a life that just cannot be replicated.  It seriously is the best treat to buy the $4 flower bouquet at Trader Joe’s and enjoy them all week long.  But the absolute worst feeling is getting so excited about your beautiful bouquet and having them die two days later!  I’m not going to lie… I have a bit of a black thumb.  I killed a cactus.  THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO DIE!  So I’ve used some tips, tricks and lots of trial and error to come up with my top 10 tips to help your flowers last longer so you can enjoy them longer!

  1. Cut off 1/2 inch of flower stems at a 45º angle immediately once home
  2. Split stems up the center about 1/2 inch {this is especially great for hydrangeas and other finicky flowers}
  3. Rinse ends of stems {post-cut} in warm water to remove excess sap
  4. Make sure to thoroughly wash and rinse vase so it’s completely clean
  5. Use distilled/filtered water <<SO important if you live in an area with super hard water like me!
  6. Remove all stems that fall under the water line {they just rot and get yucky!}
  7. Don’t place water in direct sunlight!  Seems counter-intuitive but trust me, they will die!
  8. Change water every 2 days to keep it fresh
  9. Consider using a water additive, like the “flower food” that comes with some arrangements, a mixture of vinegar and sugar or even Sprite! Depending on the flower type it can really help!
  10. Enjoy your beautiful fresh flowers! :)

Last Minute Entertaining

March 25, 2015

last minute entertainingI absolutely love entertaining! It’s so fun having my friends over for wine, snacks and friendship.  I typically host once a week for Scandal night {TGIT!} but often people will stop by unexpectedly.  Whether it’s a planned wine night or last-minute get together, I try to always have a few things on hand to make hosting easy and stress free!

Of course, a bottle of wine is an absolute must, along with some easy and delicious snacks!  Some of my go-to’s?  I almost always have stuff on hand for guacamole {seriously such a hit at wine night}, a delicious block of cheese to serve with crackers, hummus with veggies or a tasty salsa or dip to share.

last minute entertaining 2As for supplies, there are a few things that I have found always get used and are so helpful to have on hand! Obviously wine glasses are a given {duh!} and serve ware for the snacks.  I find that having a large serving bowl for popcorn, crackers & chips AND small bowls for dips, veggies, & chocolates are ideal.  Often overlooked but soooo helpful are paper plates and napkins!  I can’t even tell you how great it is to save on cleaning time, and they look adorable!
